Why the make-up of executive teams is critical to the success?

The most important decision a business makes isn't its strategy. It's who sits around the executive table.

I've seen great strategies fail because the leadership team lacked the right mix of skills, perspectives, and challenge. And I've seen businesses with modest plans outperform expectations simply because their executive team was exceptional.

Yet so many businesses still build exec teams based on tenure, loyalty, or convenience — rather than intentional design.

If you're scaling, restructuring, or simply asking why growth has stalled, I’d start by looking at the room where the decisions get made.

Here's what I believe makes the difference:

  • Diversity of thought - not just background, but cognitive style. You need people who challenge assumptions, not just validate them.

  • Complementary strengths - a room full of visionaries with no operators is a recipe for chaos. Balance matters.

  • Psychological safety - exec teams that can debate fiercely and disagree openly make better decisions. Groupthink is a silent killer.

  • Shared values, not shared opinions - alignment on purpose and culture doesn't mean everyone thinks the same way.
