The Challenges of Moving from an Individual Contributor Role to a People Leader and Manager

In my experience, moving from an individual contributor to a people leader is one of the most significant yet often underestimated transitions in a professional career.

For most, promotion into management comes as a reward for being brilliant at our craft. But the craft changes completely the moment we step into the role. I have watched as technical excellence, personal output, and individual problem-solving are replaced by a much messier set of demands: building trust, navigating personalities, having difficult conversations, and creating the conditions for others to do their best work.

All too often, it’s a transition that very few organisations properly prepare people for.

If you're in the middle of it, here are a few things that tend to help:

  • Give yourself permission to be a beginner again. You were great at your last job. This is a different job. The learning curve is real and it's okay to acknowledge it.

  • Invest time in understanding your people as individuals. What motivates them? Where do they want to grow? What gets in their way? The answers will shape how you lead each person differently.

  • Resist the pull to jump back into the doing. When things get busy or uncertain, it's tempting to roll your sleeves up and solve problems yourself. That's often the wrong call - it disempowers your team and keeps you stuck in the wrong gear.

  • Find your own support. Whether that's a mentor, a coach, a peer group, or simply a trusted colleague who's navigated the same shift - don't try to figure it out alone.

The transition is challenging, but it's also genuinely rewarding. Leading people well is a skill worth building deliberately.
